Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs – Where are you?

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a model that shows what motivates a human.

There’s 5 level in the model and in order for a person to “move up” in the model they must possess or are satisfy with all of the below.

  • Physiological – Basic Needs (Food, Water, Shelter, Clothing)
  • Safety – I guess this is where insurance comes in handy and some sort of financial reserves or protection
  • Love/Belonging – building relationships with friends, finding a live partner, having family and starting family
  • Esteem – I think this is were people wants their name written on something important, whether getting an award, getting published somewhere for achievement or just the sight of their name flashed on the TV when they donate to Telethon
  • Self-Actualisation – This is where a person find something bigger than themselves and commit to the cause, some social entrepreneurs fall in this category and I’m thinking many of the religious priest/monks etc.

In my mind, most people in 3rd world country will be in the bottom two, where they spend most of their time searching for food, water and to make sure they are safe. People in developing country start breaking out one level because they will most likely have the survival (food, water, clothing, shelter) taken care of. For the lucky people in 1st world country, I guess they start thinking about getting ahead and making a ‘name’ for themselves.

So the question is, do you know where you sit? If not, look at what you are motivated by or what you are spending most of your time doing…

  • are you working on some ground breaking project?
  • are you struggling to balance your finances and make ends meet?
  • are you looking for that special somebody?
  • or are you meditating under a Banyan tree waiting for enlightening?

Once you understand where you sit, you can start to build your foundation and pursue something that excites you (ie. your passion, unique potential, sleeping giant). So don’t spend too much time walking around in circle doing your boring routine in the game of life when you can do so much more!

Its amazing that Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs model still makes so much sense in today’s world and culture.

Barack Obama: Leader of the new era

barack-obama-and-martin-luther-king

Barack Obama

Many people say that it’s the beginning of a new era if Barack Obama wins this election. Obviously Obama is now the 44th President of America. It’s very interesting to see how far America has come to for us to see the first Black President. America has obviously evolved quite a bit since the days of slavery and is pretty incredible to see Martin Luther King’s famous speech, “I have a dream…” actually beginning to come true.

Another bonus for Obama is that he grew up in Indonesian and hopefully understands some Muslim culture and custom. We will find out if this is true, but it’s what we would like to think, at least hopefully understand more than the other 43 presidents before him since he has actually lived and experienced it first hand.

Also, Obama grew up in the ‘main streets’ of America and faced many of the same challenges ‘main street’ American faced. Unlike some of the more recent president who were effectively born and breed into a role of politics, Obama is just another ‘Joe Bloggs’ from the street (within my time anyways). Let’s hope Obama can get America out of the mess that Bush created.

Personally I think it’s great that an ordinary black American from the streets can become the president of America. It truly makes you believe, if he can become the first black president of America, then we can be and do anything we put our mind to!

What is your excuse?

Until next time, I can’t help but leave you with this inspiring leadership quote:

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

Steve Jobs – 2005 Stanford Commencement Address

This is one of my favourite YouTube clip. Every time I watch Steve Jobs I get goose bumps! It’s one of the most inspirational clip I have ever watched.

Steve Jobs 3 lessons:

  1. Follow your heart. – “You cannot connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect it looking backward.”
  2. Love what you do – “keep looking, don’t settle”
  3. Ask yourself, “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” – “Your time is limited, don’t waste it by living somebody else’s dream”

Until next time, “Stay hungry, stay foolish”
