Most small business are built on the same business model and hence have the same profit drivers. when thinking about small business strategy, small businesses all have certain key similarities.

Customers

Goods/Services

Cost of Goods/Services

Before thinking about strategy to attract more customers customers we need to understand the two main drivers which leads to a customer.

How many people know about your business and the good/services that you provide?

How many of them can you attract to become your customers?

once a small business has acquired a customer, the obvious next step is how much money do we make from this customer. To understand this we need to understand the two drivers of revenue or gross income.

How much does the good/services sell for?

How many good/services does the customer buy?

Another way of seeing this is:

How much value in a basket of good/services?

How many times does the customer purchase in a given period?

In short, to find out how much revenue is generated per customer we need to know how much and how many.

Lastly, once a small business finds out how much revenue each customer is bringing for the business they need to understand their cost of acquiring the customer, goods/services. The driver for this is:

Profit Margin

Obviously the higher the better, but businesses in certain industry group or businesses that sell certain type of goods/services will tend to have different margin. auto-manufacturers have lower margins compared to online business selling ebooks.

Summary
The five key drivers to small business profits are:

Leads

Conversion

Revenue per Transaction

Number of Transactions

Profit Margins

I learnt about this many years ago but never really need to use it because some of the affiliate programs that I signed up for didn’t allow me to parse data back from Google Adwords. If you’re reading this you’ll know the reason why you might want to be parsing keywords in Google Adwords, but for the benefit of other readers I’ll quickly explain.

When people search on Google they can type any combination of keywords to find the information that they want. As advertisers (affiliate marketers), we want to know what the user is typing. You might be thinking, why?

There might be phrase that we didn’t think about – ie we can now build more specific keywords and hence reduce our advertising spend and increasing return

There might be a phrase that we don’t want to be advertising for – ie. we can now stop advertising on keywords that we don’t want and hence save wasted advertising budget

Apart from the two, it allows us to understand the market that are clicking through our Ads and measuring which Keyword terms are more convertable (ie. they signed up to something, made a purchase, do some action that we wanted etc.)

Anyways, if you want to know how this is done, Google has a great tutorial which takes less than 5 minutes to learn –
How Do I User Keyword Insertion? (Tutorial)

PS: Another word people use for Parsing Keywords in Google Adword is Keyword Insertion or Dynamic Keyword Insertion

Peter Elsworth was born in Melbourne, Victoria, and spent his childhood growing up in the footsteps of his two elder brothers – so much so that he was even given the hand-me-down nickname of Barney, which has stuck with him for life.

Peter viewed school as a means to an end rather than a desirable place to be. Apart from showing a great enthusiasm for football, cricket and golf, he regarded school as a daily duty and not a stimulating experience. After leaving school, Peter studied a Bachelor of Commerce at university, majoring in economics and accounting. His casual interest in the stock market rapidly transformed into a passion when he realised that learning about stocks meant he could generate income without actually having a job. He had finally found something that rewarded learning.

After completing his degree, he went on to complete his MBA at the University of Melbourne. His end-of-year thesis, Use and Limitations of Published Financial Accounts for Investment Analysis, helped him develop a trading software program.

Today, Peter Elsworth is the CEO of Traders International Futures Pty Ltd. With a strong bias for teaching clients trading strategies, his organisation also offers the truly unique feature of a live trading room. This room allows clients to log in and follow the US share index futures market in real time. It also includes the input of a professional trader who marks buy and sell signals on live charts. The Traders International motto is ‘do as we do’ – Peter backs his teaching with actions, providing 100 per cent transparency on the results.

====

Income Tax Withholding Variation – Get Your Taxes Back Before the Financial Year!

For the people who are new to this I will briefly explain what Income Tax Withholding Variation is:

PAYG income tax withholding variation (ITWV) is used for people on the PAYG (Pay As You Go) system, i.e. pretty much everybody who is on a salary. This just means that your employer is withholding some part of your salary base on your tax payable and sending it to the tax man, Mr ATO (Australian Taxation Office).

You might be thinking, what’s the point of all this and how is this going to benefit you? Well If you have tax deductible expenses such as interest on an investment property, margin loan, land rates, water charges, property management expenses etc. then this will be useful for you. What usually happen is that you get a tax refund at the end of the financial year because your employer has withheld too much tax for the tax man (simply because your employer doesn’t know that you have investment properties or other tax deductible expenses).

By completing a PAYG income tax withholding variation (ITWV) application, you are applying for all those investment deductions to be refunded during the year via reduction in the tax withholding that’s been applied by your employer to your pay slips. This way it seems like you are getting more cash from your pay slips due to the reduction in the tax withheld. This money can be used for anything, hopefully you will use it to pay for those expenses when it happens or simply set it aside to offset interest or even earn interest in some high interest account, instead of sitting in the tax man, Mr ATO’s bank account earning interest for them.

Once you complete this form, the ATO will tell your employer to make the necessary changes to your pay slips. So get on-line today and complete one, especially if you have deductible expenses!

There are two ways of submitting the application:

complete the e-form and submit it on-line (highly recommended because you get it done straight away)

printing the form out and completing it yourself and ’snail’ mail it to the ATO, if you don’t know how to fill out the form ask you accountant about it. The form is actually very easy to fill out!

Example:

Here’s a quick example of how PAYG income tax withholding variation (ITWV) will help you:
For simplicity i am going to assume the following:

Tax rate is 30%( flat rate across all income)

You get paid monthly

You earn $50,000 a year

You have net $12,000 worth of investment expense ($1,000 per month)

BASE CASE

Your taxable income is $50,000, so your tax payable is $15,000 (30% x $50,000)

Your employer will withhold 30% ($15,000 per year) of your salary and send it to the tax man

This means your monthly pay slip is $2,916.67 ($35,000 / 12)

You will need to spend $1,000 for your investment expense monthly

This leaves you with $1,916.67 for your living expenses and savings per month

You get a huge tax refund at the end of the financial year $3,600 (30% x$12,000)

AFTER PAYG income tax withholding variation (ITWV)

Your taxable income is $38,000 ($50,000 – $12,000), so your tax payable is $11,400 (30% x $$38,000)

Your employer will withhold 30% ($11,400 per year) of your salary and send it to the tax man

This means your monthly pay slip is $3,216.67 ($38,600 / 12)

You will need to spend $1,000 for your investment expense monthly

This leaves you with $2,216.67 for your living expenses and savings per month

You get NO tax refund at the end of the year, but you received $300 more a month which could be better used in your hands than the tax man, Mr ATO’s hand

So the question is will you be doing your PAYG income tax withholding variation (ITWV) this year? or at least find out from your accountant what this is all about!

This one is for all the readers in Australia… (but applies in theory to everybody in the world)

Happy days for consumers! I don’t think many people were expecting a 100 basis point interest rate cut today. For the people who know me, I’ve been against fixing interest rates especially with the tightening credit market and the outlook of the Australian economy over the past 3-6 months. The cost of funding for banks has been increasing due to the tightening credit market and it’s very obvious since the market was pricing in an interest rate cut for this month. To tell you the truth, I wasn’t expecting a 100 basis point interest rate cut, so I’m just as surprised as you.

What does this mean? It’s obviously good for anybody on a variable interest rate rate, but not so good if you recently fixed your interest rate. Most variable interest rates are currently around ~9%, so with this official interest rate cut we should see variables interest rates to drop to around ~8.25%. (Yes, banks are not expected to pass the full 100 basis point interest rate drop… so be happy that they are even passing between 70-80% of it to us) The other good news is we should expect the banks to slowly pass on the rest of the interest rate cut over the next 12-18 months as the credit crisis lessens.

With this news I reckon its a very good time to look into adding or starting your property portfolio, especially if you’ve been holding out for something drastic to happen… Hopefully you’ve been saving up lots of cash for a deposit. All I can say is that you’re not going to get another moment like this in the next 10 years, property prices in Australia have pulled back so much and interest rates are now falling for with more expectations of future interest rate drops.

If property is not your cup of tea, I think its also a great idea to get educated and learn about the stock market. There’s a lot of undervalued stock and many of the ‘blue chip’ type stocks are cheap compared to 12 months ago (20-50% discount) I think the next 12-18 months there will be a sign of recovery especially considering the market has fallen ~35% over the past 12 months. Obviously wait for the sign to happen before putting your live savings into it, if you don’t know what signs to look for… It might be a good time to learn now.

I don’t believe there will be another time in the next 10 years that properties or stocks will ever be this cheap again, so do consider taking advantage of this moment especially if you’ve been cashing up over these rough periods!

All the best with your investing!

Yong-Long

PS: The Australian dollar is getting hammered, it’s currently around ~0.71 AUD/USD. It’s fallen from record highs of ~0.96-0.98 about 6 months ago… so you may want to hold back from finalising any long overseas holidays (definitely not a good time to go, unless you changed your money already 3-6 months ago).

PSS: Obviously these are my thoughts, so don’t take my word for it, this is what I’ll be investing my time doing over the next 12-18 months. I suggest you educate yourself about property, stock market or finance etc. and start implementing some strategies. At
